Oedipus Question #2

Would Oedipus' fate have been realized if he had not been sent away by Jocasta?

  1. I believe that Oedipus would have lived up to the phrophecy regardless of where he lived because of how strongly the society believed in the power of the Gods. Because of this, I believe that the people around Oedipus and Oedipus himself would push the phrophecy to come true, without knowing it.

  2. I agree with Tracy. When these plays were written Gods played a huge role and fate was also a huge component. Oedipus would have fulfilled his prophecy despite other peoples actions.

  3. I actually don't think that Oedipus tradegy would have been fulfilled, because if Jocasta wouldn't have sent him away he wouldn't have had killed his father and then he wouldn't have married his mother. He would have lived a normal life, I personally think it is the decisions that people make that mold your future not fate.

  4. I agree with you that it is decisions that mode your future and not "fate." However, because they believed sooo greatly in God.. i think that they would subconsciously (is that the right word?) act upon the prophecy.. like when you're running a race and you think you're going to do bad so you do bad? You know what I mean? I don't think he would have lived a normal life because, like I said before, the gods impacted their lives greatly and I feel that they would have lived in fear.

  5. One theme of the play is that you cannot go against the God's will. Given this I agree with both Tracie and Yadira. I think that given Jocasta's personality it was never an option for her not to send her child away to die when she heard the prophecy. She is too proud and tries to make sure the prophecy will never happen to her. In this sense the God's might have known this was going to happen and it is possibly a statement on her pride which is the ultimate reason why this all happened. If Jocasta had a different personality then what happened with her and Oedipus probably wouldn't have happened, but also the same fate probably wouldn't have been predicted.
